  2. Shah, Anup. "WTO Doha “Development” Trade Round Collapse, 2006 — Global Issues." Global Issues : Social, Political, Economic and Environmental Issues That Affect Us All — Global Issues. July-Aug. 2006. Web. 11 Apr. 2011. .

    A. The Doha “Development” Trade Round collapsed at the end of July, 2006, in the United States.
    B. The Doha “Development” Round has been known to show that this round of trade negotiations were to favor poor countries’ ability to develop and prosper from global trade. Global trade has been unequal and in favor of the rich countries.
    C. The Doha “Development” Round is not for targeting the flaws in global trade, but to have fair trade, not only free trade. The goal of the development round is to demonstrate new opportunities for developing countries. In other words, developing countries have equal opportunity similar to the markets of developed countries.
    D. In my opinion, this is a wise development plan. I feel that developing countries should have the same “respect” in their markets as developed countries have. The global trade is unequal in that rich countries have more success than poor countries. This development plan would bring equality to not only the global trade but between developed and developing countries.

  3. Beaumont, Peter. "IMF Loan to Sri Lanka Can Go Ahead | World News | Guardian.co.uk." Latest News, Comment and Reviews from the Guardian | Guardian.co.uk. 1 May 2009. Web. 11 Apr. 2011.

    a. Where is this partnership taking place?
In the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

    b. Why is this institution involved there?
After an the end of an internal civil conflict, Sri Lanka has been allowed a $2.6 Billion loan from the IMF in order to promote reconstruction efforts, and to help a downed economy get back on its feet. After the end of the Sri Lankan civil war, the government will need money to stimulate the stock market, as well as rebuild infrastructure.

    c. What are their goals for this project?
The IMF hopes that the loan will both act as a stimulant for the Sri Lankan economy, and act as an incentive for promoting UN humanitarian goals in the nation. This will also force international cooperation for a government which does not have the cleanest human rights record. It is important that the IMF can hit this double whammy and counter economic stagnation, and mend a humanitarian crisis.

    d. In your opinion, is this a wise investment/ development plan? Explain.
I think this is a wise call as even though $2.6 Billion may not seem like a lot compared to US Government spending standards, it can get a lot more bang for the buck in a partly developed nation. This will also help in making the government of Sri Lanka cooperate with members of the UN in setting itself straight on the basis of humanitarian record. This will also help the South Asian Island rebuild roads, bridges, and help take care of the displaced civilian victims of the civil war which spanned almost 30 years, creating jobs, and stimulating the economy on the way.

  4. 1. November 27th 2009, the WTO made a program called Aid for Trade. This program is taking place in under developed countries in the African regions. This program was created in order to help the under developed countries develop trade skills and expand their trade. The main goal for the WTO is to make sure that there is good communication internationally as well as regionally so that governments could start making deals and trading.

2.The WTO is a global organization that makes the rules of trade between nations all over the world. It regulates and makes sure each nation gets a fair deal in trades. The purpose of the WTO is to allow importers and exporters to do business without any unfair trades. The WTO is in the area where under developed countries are because it’s trying to create equal opportunities so that under developed countries have a chance a modernizing and a chance to rise to the top. Also, the WTO is trying to raise the value of currency so that other countries will consider trading with these countries.

    3. The goals for this project is to incorporate under developed countries into the world of trade. Instead of all the top countries trading amongst themselves, the goal of the WTO is to make sure every country has a chance to expand their economy. By making fair trade polices and laws regarding trade, the WTO hopes to make trading fair between nations.

    4. In my opinion I think this plan is going to be useless. Even though the WTO says it’s going to do this. The money invested in this program will probably end up going to the CEO’s of WTO. Even though they say that they want to help the reality is that all the money wont be going toward the effort, but rather only a percentage.

  5. The World Trade Organization was designed to help both importing businesses and exporting businesses. Basically, it is around so that businesses worldwide will be run more efficiently. Out of all of the national money organizations, this is the only one that deals and specializes in trade between nations. Recently, the World Trade Organization was consulted by Vladimir Putin, for reasons that Russia would like to join and be supported by the organization. Vladimir Putin and Russia in general want to join the World Trade Organization so that the pirating of pharmaceutical drugs and medicines can be stopped. They have also been speaking with Finland about tariffs for traded goods. The World Trade Organization is getting involved because this problem concerns the trade of pharmaceutical goods and tariffs between nations. This is precisely why the World Trade Organization was created. It’s watching the trade that is happening. The goal of Russia and the World Trade Organization is regulate the drug trade and to prevent the pirated goods from being dispensed and sold in Russia. If Russia become part of the World Trade Organization, many good things will happen. The trade of drugs and other pharmaceuticals needs to be regulated. If bad drugs are sold, than it is a great risk to Russia’s health. It is also dangerous enough that it needs to be stopped so it can’t spread. If it is stopped in one spot in the world, than other nations can follow suit. This is a great investment because with the greater regulation, more drugs will be safe for shipment around the world.

  6. TRIPS and the WTO - killing millions for massive profits
    http://struggle.ws/ws/2001/64/trips.html

    A. The World Trade Organization (WTO) is taking partnerships with the Trade Related Aspects Of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) in the country of Africa.

    B. The WTO is involved with the TRIPS organization in Africa because in Africa, over millions of people are diseased and are dying from the rapidly growing AIDS epidemic. The World Trade Organizations agreement on Trade Related Aspects Of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) was created to allow many international corporations to take ownership of medical patents.

    C. The WTO's and the TRIPS organizations goal for the AIDS epidemic is to help fund a medical drug that will substantially improve the health of African citizens. And also to widen there life span expectancy. This would involve more than one nation to contribute to this project. Their goal was also to make sure that this would promote change in other third world countries. So that they can create change as well.

    D. In my personal opinion, this was not a very wise development plan because this project that was ran by WTO and TRIPS had restrained all third world countries from creating other versions of the AIDS drug. This was presently the only ambition of survival for tens of millions of people in Africa. And now that was all taken away from them. Also they could not be able to produce this life saving drug without the help of other third world country corporations. And on top of all that, the people of Africa are not financially fit to purchase the drugs. I think this was all based on greed and obtaining more income. But at the cost of millions of innocent peoples deaths.

  7. a. Where is this partnership taking place? The WTO has a partnership with JIATP which is Joint Intergrated Technical Assistance Programme. This program is for selected and least developed African countries.

    b. Why is this institution involved there? In October on 1994, African Trade Ministers called on an international community to help strenghten their capacity to participate in the WTO, intergrate into the new Multilateral Trading System(MTS), and to take advantage of new trade opportunites arising from the globalization of world markets. Officials stressed on needing trade-related techinical assistance (TRTA). In 1996, during the UNCTAD IX conference in Midrand, WTO,UNCTAD,and ITC made a commitment to develop a joint programme to help meet the needs expressed by these countries.

    c. What are their goals for this project? They have some goals which are to build national capacity to understand the evolving MTS and its implications for external trade, adapt the national trading system to the obligations and disciplines of the new MTS, and seek maximum advantage from the new MTS by enhancing the readiness of exporters. They want to strenghten and build the the capicaty of African countries to intergrate into the MTS.

    d. In your opinion, is this a wise investment/ development plan? Explain. I think that this is a wise investment plan. Many countries need to trade items just to get what they need, like food, clothes, and other items.

  8. Starting in 1995 the World Trade Organization had plans of making a difference. Talks of global trade progressed again in Doha, Qatar, in November 2001. Negotiations came about in July 2008, and there is a plan to attempt to restart them. The World Trade Organization is an organization that helps trade run more smoothly by reducing tariffs and quotes and increasing fair trade by creating (for lack of a better word) rules. Additionally they help lower class countries become better off. The WTO emphasized lower tariffs in manufacturing, but the Uruguay forced them to broaden their horizons to set more rules liberalizing trade in agricultural products, services, investment and government procurement. The W.T.O. has also been trying, with small success, to persuade a wider variety of countries to sign its attempt for free trade in government goods. China agreed to the process in 2001 but has refused to sign. In my opinion this was not a wise development plan. It always seems as though this plan is always failing then just being attempted again. It doesn’t seem steady therefore can not possibly be the best way to go about this. People’s time and money should go into a secure plan, one that has not dissolved before.

  10. The World Trade Organization is an example of an institution that reflects a modern issue and region being affected. The WTO’s primary purpose is to help promote free trade by drawing up the rules of international trade. However, there has been controversy and issues in which rich counties interests are held first, making it worse for the poor. This causes protests, conflict, and harsh criticism.

A few years ago, Mexico made a complaint regarding the concerns of importation, marketing, and sale of tuna and tuna products. Mexico consulted with the United States. Mexico alleged that the US measures have the effect of prohibiting the labeling of Mexican tuna and tuna products as “dolphin-safe”. Mexico feels that this is unfair because the tuna Mexico produces has been harvested and comply with the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission. Also, most other countries, including the US, that produce tuna are allowed to be labeled as “dolphin-safe”.

Mexico argued that these labeling measures are inconsistent with Articles 2, 5, 6, and 8 of the TBT Agreement and Articles 1 and 3 of the GATT 1994. The goals of this project is to have a consultation on this issue and establish a panel meeting. In April 2009, the DSB established a panel including the following countries who reserved their third-party rights: Argentina, Australia, China, Ecuador, the European Communities, Guatemala, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Chinese Taipei and Turkey. In December 2009, Mexico requested for the Director-General to determine the composition of the panel. However, over the next two years to current day, no final reports have been made because there have been many extensions to panel dates due to schedule and death of a panel member.

In my opinion, this is a wise development plan because this current issue that Mexico is consulting with, goes against several articles of the TBT Agreements and of the GATT 1994. It is not right that Mexico is prohibited against the labeling of tuna and tuna products, while other countries including the United States are able to use the labeling. I see no reason why Mexico should be prohibited from “dolphin-safe” labeling if they comply with the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission.

A- A region currently being affected by the World Bank is Egypt. The World Bank is taking part in the reconstruction of Egypt's environment, economy, educational system, Agricultural sector and working hard to help poor in upper Egypt.

B- The World Bank is involved everywhere. They work hard in regions that they feel need the most help. The World Bank is involved in Egypt mainly because of poverty and their fight to reduce it. Other than poverty, there are many reasons why the World Bank is involved in Egypt. (Stated in A)

C- The World Banks goals for the reconstruction of Egypt are to support the development of its nation, create an environment that will continue to grow, continue to provide assistance to the Industrial Pollution Abatement, support the development of the Agricultural sector etc. The World Bank in Egypt provides a lot to the nation to reconstruct all areas of defect. Their mission overall is to reduce poverty.

D- In my opinion I think the World Banks involvement in Egypt is a great plan. They are giving money to the educational systems for children and working hard reconstruct and rebuild the nation. Like every other nation, Egypt needs recovery. The World Bank works hard to help. Their plan is brilliant and soon enough, they will win their fight to end poverty.

  12. 1. On November 13, 2006 the WTO announced a formalized slavery model for Africa. This formalized slavery plan will require western companies that are doing business in Africa to own their workers outright.
    2. The WTO is involved in Africa because Africa has a history high poverty and unemployment rates. By creating the formalized slavery plan the, the WTO hopes to reduce widespread poverty in Africa. The WTO wishes to provide full private stewardry to African nations hardest hit by five hundred years of free trade with the West.
    3. The goal of this formalized slavery model is to provide a solution to African poverty. In African factories now, the main concern for workers is how many hours a worker can work a day and for how many years. If the worker were to become pregnant or worst affected by HIV/AIDS the worker would be immediately fired. Now with the formalized slavery model, workers that become sick will have to be provided with care from employers.
    4. Some people may disagree with this formalized slavery model because they believed that it promotes modern day slavery. Although, the workers are now basically owned by the employers they will be provided with better social and economic benefits. Because the employers now owns them, the employer will be forced o provide care if one of the workers becomes sick. Although, this will not be an immediate end to poverty in Africa it is certainly a great start. The formalized slavery model is a good idea in helping decrease poverty in Africa.

The World Trade Organization, not only deals with rules of trading between nations but also
with issues around the world. The World Trade Organization, WTO, and the United States
Agency for International Development, USAID, have joined forces to form a partnership which
will assist Nigeria in not only in the areas of trade but as well as actualization of the vision 2020.
The Nigeria Vision 2020 is a goal that Nigeria will be one of the 20 largest economies in the
world. Both the WTO and the USAID are supporting the Nigerian government to conduct trade so they can have standard international practice in making decisions for their country. Through this support, the WTO and USAID are convinced that there will be improvement in trade, more jobs and alleviate poverty in Nigeria.
These organizations want to build up Nigeria and make it a very successful country. The
Unemployment in Nigeria is running at around 19.7 percent on average, but almost half of 15-25 year olds living in urban areas are jobless. They feel trade will help boost the economy in Nigeria because trade gives the country what they need and build up businesses with trade.
In my opinion this is a very good idea. To have a goal set for Nigeria helps motivate the
government of Nigeria and show that they can be successful due to some help. People can have more jobs, and have homes. The country itself can fix itself to look modern and fix anything needed. The WTO and are trying to help them become a strong economy so it is up to the Nigerian government to be wise with trade and businesses so they can give other people jobs. If people make the right choices then this plan can turn out to be very successful.

  14. The World trade organization was founded in 1995 to promote internation trade and economic development by reducing tariffs and other restrictions. They set rules and member government go to them to try to sort out trade disputes. Aid for Trade aims to help developing countries, particularly least-developed countries, develop the trade-related skills and infrastructure that is needed to implement and benefit from WTO agreements and to expand their trade. This partnership between these two organization has made it possible for many developing countries to make some capital through their exports. This is money that can be poured back into their country.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The goal of these organizations is about providing financial and technical assistance to developing countries, especially the LDCs, to help them build up their supply-side capacity and strengthen their trade-related infrastructure to enable them to produce and trade more. Many African countries as well as other countries have benefited tremendously and it has set the stage for their future trade relationships. In my opinion I think that providing this assistance for developing countries is something that will help all parties involved. Developing countries continue to grow and the World trade organization is truly helping the world by providing assistance.

  16. The WTO has partnered up with AID for Trade on West African countries. The Aid for Trade
aims to help poor countries take advantage of new trading opportunities.West African countries are in need of help economically and with its infrastructure. West African countries face many problems. Exports need to be given in wider ranges and give more to offer rather than the few commodities.Poor generation, with little network coverage also interferes with the reliability
of the industry. Aid for Trade can help West Africa face these problems. The Aid for Trade helps least-developed countries to develop skills so the WTO can expand its trade.
People feel that the good is West African countries such as Nigeria and Abuja are too small and they are not expanding due to the little goods they offer. They are in need of help. The Aid For Trade has goal to help mature these countries in need and give them a strong infrastructure,so it can also benefit the WTO with trading. In my opinion this is a wise investment plan because
it can help boost5 up the economy of other countries and maybe prices wouldnt be so high. The economy can be equal and leveled up internationally. It should be up to these countries however,if they want the help or they are okay with the goods they have. If there was more trade in these West African countries they can have more opportunities and have more jobs for the less fortunate.

  17. The WTO (World Trade Organization) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. The goal is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business. Some of the benefits of the WTO is that it promotes peace, freer trade, cuts the cost of living, provides more choice of products and qualities, trade raises incomes and it encourages good government.
One of the countries involved in the WTO is the United States. It has been a WTO member since January 1, 1995. The United States maintains one of the world’s most open trade although in a few areas barriers to market access persist. According to the WTO Report on the trade policies and practices of the United States, reducing these barriers would strengthen the trading system and lesson the friction with trading partners.
The United States trade agenda includes Free-Trade Area with Chile, Jordan, and Singapore. The US has also proposed long term agricultural trade liberization by reducing tariffs.
I believe this is wise because it would keep the cost low for consumers.

The WTO is an organization whose sole purpose is to regulate, supervise, and distribute trade throughout the world's nations. It was formed in 1948 to take the place of GATT, or General Agreements on Tariffs and Trade.

Not all nations are members of the WTO, it's members include 147 countries, over 97% of the world's trade. The G-20, is a group of 20 Finance Ministers, 19 plus all countries currently using the Euro.

Generally speaking, the role of the WTO is to regulate and encourage global trade. They also settle trade disputes between member nations, acting as a judge of sorts.

The IMF was founded in 1945. It's sole purpose is to oversee the global financial system from a macroeconomic standpoint. The IMF carries out their mission by monitoring exchange rates, helping distribute development in all nations, and offering loans to struggling nations. The IMF gets its funds from a pool of contributions from more developed nations. These nations contribute money on a temporary basis, so that the IMF can distribute aid to struggling countries. The IMF, though driven by a noble cause, often takes criticism for it's conditions, when offering financial aid.

The World Bank is similar to the IMF in that it offers financial aid to countries who need it, but on a longer term basis.Like the IMF, the world bank gets its money from its more wealthy member countries. There are 187 member countries. The members of the bank vote on the actions the bank takes.
